Thursday April 17, 2014, at 7:00 PM: Book Talk at Sanborn Regional High School
The fourth of our five-part discussion series led by UNH Professor Ethel Sara Wolper. The evening's discussion will be on Leo Africanus by Amin Maalouf, translated by Peter Slugett.

Please read as much as you can of the first half and then skip to the Book of Rome (chapter IV) and finish the book.  I do not want people to stress out about finishing the whole book, but do want them to trace his journeys and changes through Rome.

Questions and Issues:

Was this remarkable gentleman a product of his times?

What was the role of language and religion in uniting and dividing the cultures of the Andalusian peninsula and North Africa (as well as Cairo and Istanbul)?

Nostalgia and the memory of Granada play an important role in Leo Africanus' story.  Please comment how markers of language, ethnicity and religion supported that nostalgia.

Wednesday April 30, 2014, at 7:00 PM: A Year of Silence
